Favignana

The maximum elevation of the island is that of Mount St. Catherine (314 meters), dominated by the homonymous fort built in Norman times.

Great importance has been the island's commitment to the Florio family in 1874 to 2,700,000 pounds buy whole islands Egadi and refurbished the old tuna fishery establishments, giving employment to the people of the island that still remembers the exploits of this noble and ancient family.

The slaughter takes place in May and is a ritual for the entire community of Favignana, the choral tradition, a ceremony intense and bloody that summarizes the symbolic value of the eternal struggle for survival between man and nature.

It now accounts for an activity predominantly folk, since the reduced number of tuna caught does not allow an economically viable operation. We can not now predict whether and for how long this age-old ritual takes place in the clear waters in front of Favignana.

Favignana is also famous for its quarries, improperly called "tuff". The Stone of Favignana is in fact a limestone and volcanic rock as the real tuff. In 1991 in Favignana was established nature reserve Egadi. The island is full of typical Mediterranean maquis and garrigue grows lush. It is one of the few smaller islands of Sicily in which there is a population of emerald Sicilian toad (Bufo siculus).

The best known sea access on the island of Favignana are:

  • Lido Burrone (sandy)
  • Cala Azzurra (small beach with rocks)
  • Cala Rossa (cliff)
  • Bue Marino (cliff)
  • Cala Grande (cliffs and beaches of pebbles)
  • Cala Rotonda (reef and beach pebbles)
  • Perciata Cave (cliff)
  • Cala Munich or Calamone (cliff and sandy beach)
  • Slide (cliff)

And many many other hidden coves ... discover!
